Spring Into Action party a HUGE success!

On Sunday, May 1, we had a tremendous turnout and lots of fun in honor of the PLAYGROUND RENOVATION PROJECT.  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day in the park with lots of friends and neighbors.  The kids enjoyed delicious ice cream donated by Toy Boat, ringing the bell on a real firetruck from Fire Station #10, and dancing to the music of Enzo Garcia.  Face painting was also a big hit!  The lucky raffle winners will enjoy SF Giants tickets this summer, plus tickets to the Balenciaga show at the Conservatory of Flowers, and tickets to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.  Thank you to the SF Parks Trust, Ernst & Young, and the Francher family for their generous donations.

We are proud to report that we met the generous $1,000 matching grant from our partner, FMLP!  The party was an inspirational start to our project and we are eager to continue outreach in the neighborhood.  Thank you to all who came and joined the fun - we literally couldn't have done it without you!  Please encourage your friends and neighbors to sign up on the mailing list (visit our mailing list tab above), keep sending us your feedback, and stay tuned for the next opportunity to be a part of MLP history!

Richmond Volunteer Group Forms to Raise Funds,
Create Safer Play Space in Mountain Lake Park
Community Event in Early May to Kick Off Renovation Efforts

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2, 2011 – Today Friends of Mountain Lake Park Playground (FMLPP), a local group of volunteers, announced efforts to renovate the park’s play space to provide a safer area for children and families.

The playground, created nearly 30 years ago, contains deteriorated wooden structures that may contain arsenic and other hazardous materials once used to treat lumber. Children playing on the structures can be exposed to the toxins in the wood.  Furthermore, the large amounts of sand surrounding the structure are difficult to keep clean and the playground lacks proper boundaries between both the nearby lake and busy streets.

“Mountain Lake Park is a San Francisco treasure,” says FMLPP volunteer Jennifer Fetner, “but local residents opt for other area parks because the playground at Mountain Lake is outdated and unsafe.  The playground and greater Mountain Lake Park have the potential to be a unique destination because of their unusual pairing: great play structures, hiking trails around the lake and open meadowland; there is really no other place in San Francisco quite like it.”

Mountain Lake Park encompasses fourteen acres in San Francisco's Richmond District. It sits just south of Mountain Lake, the only remaining natural fresh water lake in the city.  The playground received a “C” on the most recent Recreation and Parks playground assessment, one of the two lowest grades in the neighborhood.

“Play has a critical physical, emotional and social impact on kids,” says Fetner. “A renovated playground will improve the quality of life for local residents and will increase the value of the park’s surrounding homes.  It’s a win-win.”

FMLPP volunteers are working with the Neighborhood Parks Council, Friends of Mountain Lake Park and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Council to raise the necessary funds to complete the project.  The group hopes to complete the playground renovation by 2013.

FMLPP will host a community event at Mountain Lake Park in early May.  Contact FMLPP for more information: www.FMLPP.org, info@fmlpp.org.
